In recent years, prices of wine from the Holy Land of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, a.k.a. Burgundy have broken records again and again. What used to be connoisseurs' little and exclusive closet of vino discoveries and bewilderment went into overdrive when Burgundies caught the attention of new consumers in the Far East. Burgundy is very different from Bordeaux, mainly because wineries in this area tend to be small, with some vineyard owners farming only a few rows of
vines in places, so the new found fame and demand pushed prices up quickly. Sudden higher operating costs brought on first by Covid in 2020 and then the energy crisis arising from the Ukrainian war in 2022, sandwiched with a really bad frost in 2021 added to cost pressures and put to rest any hope that prices would moderate downwards.
While it feels now that you need to have a million bucks before you can enjoy Burgundy, there are still some good value wines that won't hurt your pocket too much. Maison Louis Latour has a good selection of reds and whites that remains affordable even after the run up in price. These selections are not going to take you to vino heaven and back, but in my opinion offers a lot of bang for the buck than many contemporaries. This winery established in 1797 makes an entire
