For Amarone lovers, Tommasi is a familiar name. Established in 1902 by Giacomo Battista Tommasi in 1902 with a tiny vineyard, the winery has grown through 2 World Wars to become one of Veneto's revered producers. Amarone is made appassimento, where grapes are harvested and traditionally air dried by placing them on racks. This process of airdrying allows the grapes to lose moisture naturally while preserving the acidity and fruit characteristics. This is a
long process lasting over 3 months as the grapes lose 30% to 50% of their weight and shrivel into raisins. During this time, sugars are concentrated within each grape which results in a wine that is power packed with flavours, with characteristic sweet notes and a full structure. It's a challenge to make an Amarone that is bold yet sophisticated enough to enjoy the multitude of fruits and secondary flavours such as roasted coffee. And this is where Tommasi thrives. The wines are layered and
if you are patient to decant the Amarone long enough (1.5 to 2 hours), you will be rewarded with waves upon waves of flavours that assail the nose and palate.
The best grapes go into Amarone, which is pricey because of the production process and the requirement for more grapes to be used per bottle. For value hunters, a good choice to fall back on would be the Ripasso, commonly known as "Baby Amarone" or the more unglamorous "Poor Man's Amarone". Ripasso sits between the fresh, spritely Valpolicella and Amarone. It's made literally from refermenting the dried skins that are left over from
Amarone production with Valpolicella wine. There are still a lot of unfermented sugars and flavours in the skins to be extracted in Ripasso. Because Tommasi's grapes are of top quality, the Ripasso too are delicious and cost a fraction of the Amarone.
Generally, Tommasi makes good wines across the board so if you want a daily plonk option, go for the Rafael Valpolicella Superiore or white Lugana wine. While not blockbusters like the Amarone and Ripasso, they offer great quality and are wines that I gladly drink any given day. You should give them a go too.
